FUEL TANK INCORRECT READING
Problem - When finished filling car, fuel tank shows half full on the fuel gauge.
Possibility 1 - Once car is filled up, keep an eye on distance traveled and fill up when thought is near empty.
Possibility 2 - It takes all long time getting to half way then seems to drop to empty very quickly.
Possibility 3 - Try not to let the fuel level ever get below 1/4 tank. The fuel also keeps the pump(s) cool. When you run most cars below 1/4 tank, the fuel pump is not submersed in fuel and runs much hotter. At this point there is at greater risk of failure.
Possibility 4 - My experience tells me it is the fuel sender. I have changed the connectors going to the sender with some success. The sender now tells me when it is full and slowly comes down as I am using fuel. As glad as I am that the sender is fixed (I think), I still fill up after 300 kilometres of driving. Safe than sorry. The fuel sender is under the coolant reservoir on the right hand side. Loosen the reservoir and remove the air ducting makes accessing the fuel sender easier. Clean the terminals on the sender with sander paper. This will need to be down with the sender not removed from the tank (still in the car). I replaced the terminals on the wires. The old terminals were corroded or rusted a bit.
Possibility 5 - My immobiliser was the problem. It was working intermittently and was cutting in and out and making the fuel sender read wrong.
Possibility 6 - Put an earth strap on the fuel sender. The strap has made mine work perfectly.
Possibility 7 - I fixed mine but adding an earth wire to the fuel sender. Works perfectly now.
Possibility 8 - Make sure the gauge has a good clean earth. I added an extra earth to each of my gauges.
