ENGINE TIMING 2

Problem - Right I have new rings, valves, valve guides full gasket set new cam belts and new cam bearings and a water pump kit. I have already refurbished the carbs. The main cam belt is still in place because I wanted to mark the position of the cams etc so I can put them back exactly in the same place. I don't know if there are any markings. However I took the belt that drives the distributor water pump and alternator off before I realised. How do I make sure I get that back in the right place for the timing. Presumably the rotor arm has to be pointing at NO 1 cylinder when NO 1 is at TDC. How do I set the timing?

Possibility 1 - The workshop manual will explain.

Possibility 2 - This is based on the Jalpa. Remove all the spark plugs, turn the motor over by hand until you feel air coming out of the number 1 cylinder (compression stroke). As soon as you feel the air put a screw driver down the plug hole and feel the piston come to the top of the compression stroke. (NOTE number 1 cylinder if you are standing at the back of the car facing forward is the one on the rear bank (closest to boot) and on the right hand side).

The first picture shows the timing marks. The one labelled PMS is top the dead center mark and the AA mark is the timing advance mark for when using the timing light.
The second picture indicates the the location of the timing inspection hole. If the engine is in the car you will have to jack it up or get a hoist
If you look through the inspection hole you should be able to see the PMS mark> Turn the motor slightly so it lines up exactly with the mark. You can now line up the distributor so that the rotor button is pointing towards the number 1 high tension lead (must loosen the distributor lock nut first). This should be good enough to get the car started. Last thing to do is get the engine fired up and use a timing light to make sure the AA mark is at the correct mark via the inspection hole. Adjust by turning the distributor. Remember to lock the nut down again and do final check to make sure the timing hasn't moved.

What Our Member's Are Saying

"I have spent hours looking for fixes for my Lambo and here it is in one website. Great value for money and very easy to use." Charles Wigins

"Fantastic concept and the information is very well set out. Every model for the one price is brilliant. I fixed my problem by searching another model." Tyler Mendo

"I have recently sold my Countach but I would like to give a big shout out to the one person who has been collating this information for many years and has made this website a winner. Jason is a handicapped man who is the driving force behind this website. I met Jason and his brother by accident at a car event in Australia. Even though he will never drive a car, he sure knows how to drive the internet. Well done Jason and keep up the good work." Mark W
